How Do We Prepare Future Leaders? Bathsheba, Mentorship & Succession

Who is preparing the next Solomon?

Lesson purpose: Study Bathsheba's role in Solomon's succession and the modern responsibility to mentor, prepare, and support future leaders.

Who Bathsheba was and her intervention concerning David's promised succession.
Solomon's elevation to the throne.
Preparation before position.
Mentorship, advocacy, and succession.
The duty to identify, teach, correct, encourage, and prepare those who will follow.
The danger of waiting until an office is vacant before developing a leader.

1 Kings 1:17 — Bathsheba recalls the promise that Solomon would reign after David.
1 Kings 1:30 — David confirms the promise will be fulfilled.
2 Timothy 2:2 — Commit teaching to faithful people able to teach others.

Leadership development is an obligation, not an emergency response. The next generation should be prepared before it is called to lead.

Each leader identifies one skill or body of knowledge that must be passed deliberately to another member before year's end.

What can Syene's location as a gateway teach us about wisdom, boundaries, and purpose?

Lesson purpose: Study Syene's biblical reference, geography, strategic importance, and symbolic application to leadership.

Syene, known today as Aswan, as the southern gateway of ancient Egypt.
Its Nile location near the border of Cush and importance to commerce, defense, and cultural exchange.
Ezekiel's use of “from Migdol to Syene” to describe Egypt's extent.
Syene as a lesson in boundaries, transition, purpose, and places where cultures meet.
The gateway as a place of discernment: what should enter, leave, or be examined.
Wise leaders understand boundaries without isolation and welcome what strengthens the institution.

A wise leader must know what the organization stands for, what strengthens it, and what should not be permitted to weaken its foundation.

“At the Gateway.” Identify practices and influences that should be welcomed and those that should be challenged.

What must a Prince or Princess recognize, protect, and guard?

Lesson purpose: Build upon the gateway lesson by studying the officers assigned to guard the Palace and the responsibility of every member.

The Warder inside the Palace door guards what is within.
The Sentinel outside discerns what approaches.
Together they protect the purpose.
The difference between protection and obstruction.
Vigilance as a spiritual and leadership responsibility.
Every member as a watchman over heart, speech, conduct, ritual, unity, and reputation.
Recognizing division, gossip, misinformation, disrespect, complacency, and other threats.

Members must protect the integrity, unity, ritual, reputation, and purpose entrusted to them.
